First, we give you the German Panzer Ia. Designed as a training tank, the Panzer I was used extensively in battle for five years, starting during the Civil War in Spain and ending in the Eastern Front in 1942. Outclassed as a combat tank by 1938, it continued its career as a reconnaissance vehicle. After 1942, it reverted to its original role as a training vehicle.

Many German "firsts" appeared on the hull of the Panzer I: the first command tank, the first tank destroyer, the first self-propelled gun, etc. The Panzer I was inexpensive and mobile enough as long as it was not overloaded.

Next up, the Czechoslovakian Panzer 38 (t). The most successful Czechoslovakian design and and certainly one of the most valuable military spoils that the Germans gained when they annexed Czechoslovakia in 1939. No less than 1400 were built until June of 1942 and serveral hundred were exported to Germany's allies of neutral countries (Persia, Sweden, Swizerland, etc). Even after the stop of the tank production, the chassis went on being produced for various adaptations (Flakpanzer 38, Marder, Hetzer) until the end of the war. In 1940, the Panzer 38 (t), with its cousin the Panzer 35 (t), made up fully one fourth of the total number of German tanks. Rommel's division in France in 1940 was almost entirely Czech machines.

And finally, the Renault FT17 (in two variant forms). The FT-17 was without doubt the best tank of World War I, and several hundred units were still in service in 1940. When introduced in 1917, it was the first tank to have a fully revolving turret. It first saw action at the Forêt de Retz on May 31, 1918. In the opening days of World War II, over 100 of these were in service with the Polish army, and served bravely in the face of the German blitzkrieg. The surviving units were captured by the Germans and used for security tasks.
