Battlefield: 1942 continues to inspire mod makers to covert Digital Illusions' popular WWII shooter into their own warfare mods. One upcoming mod that has gotten some attention is Desert Combat, a modern warfare mod that takes place in the Middle East. HomeLAN got a chance to chat with team leader Frank DeLise to find out more about their plans for Desert Combat.
HomeLAN - First, what was your reaction when you first played Battlefield: 1942?
Frank DeLise - I loved it, finally a game that I have been waiting for, good first person shooter with great vehilce interaction. There have been games before it, but never one that did both well. I fell in love with the game.
HomeLAN - When did the team decide to make the Desert Combat mod for the game?
Frank DeLise - Around the end of October 2002. At that point the Bf1942 community just started to come out with some good tools to help create the mod. I always wanted to create a modern day warfare mod with the gameplay style of Bf1942 and now was the perfect opportunity.
HomeLAN - How difficult is it to make a mod for the game, especially with no released mod tools yet?
Frank DeLise - Pretty difficult, mainly because of the lack of documentation and good tools. Most of the tools today are ok, but lack some features that only EA has access to at the moment. However the tools made by the BF1942 community such as Rex Hill and Moseley have made this mod a possibility. I am hoping that the start of good mods for BF1942 will get EA more interested in helping this great community by providing and SDK and or good documentation, The BF1942 engine has a lot of great mod possibilities.
HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the actual gameplay of Desert Combat?
Frank DeLise - Sure currently the game play is my like BF1942, All we have done so far is added a new set of modern day vehicles and weapons. This actually dramaticly changes the game play. For example we added A-10's,F16's, B-1B bombers, Hummers, TOW rockets, Challanger tanks, Shilka's, MLRS trucks, M16's, MP5's, etc.. Some of these vehicles add unique gameplay, for example the A-10 shoots Maverick missles which really make a mess out of a group if tanks. The shilka (Russian Modile AA) make it difficult for anyone flying in planes. .
